Evil Obsession Tour 2023
27-12-2023, Turbinenhalle, Oberhausen, Germany.
Soulburn, Imha Tarikat, Knife and Sodom
The end is near, another year passed by, but first a final concert with my Metal brothers in Germany. On a windy dark December day, just after Christmas I drove with two very good friends to Oberhausen to see four killer bands in the notorious Ruhrpott. The homeplace for Teutonic Metal in Western Germany. The place were Thrash Metal was born in 1982. When we arrived in Oberhausen we dropped our stuff in the hotel and searched for the nearest pub around to drink our first beer. More beers and a good meal followed, until we made our way to the Turbinenhalle , the venue where the event took place. When we arrived Dutch Death Thrashers Soulburn just kicked off. This was a real surprise for me, because I didn’t expect them to open. Soulburn didn’t care, they did their performance tight and heavy as always. I surely enjoyed their set of Death Metal with Black, Doom and Thrash Metal elements. In the break a few more chats and beers, till the new German Black Metal supergroup Imha Tarikat kicked off. Imha Tarikat can be described as positive Black Metal. Heavy, intense, evil and peaceful at the same time. This is band you’ll really need to see. They blew you away with their wall of sound and positive energy. A new Ruhrpott treasure to keep an eye on. More beers continued till the German band Knife kicked off with their blackened sound with thrashy vibes. A good show, but to be honest I would let them open instead of Soulburn. After more beers and chats. Sodom entered the stage. This Sodom show was a tribute to Chris Witchhunter. The drummer that sadly passed away in 2008. The band decided to play a set of classics between 1984 and 1992. From the time that Witchhunter was in de band. Sodom bombarded the place with songs like: “Agent Orange, Christ Passion, Obssesed By Cruelty, Blasphemer, Nuclear Winter, Ausgebombt”, amongst others. The fans surely enjoyed and the entire hall was headbanging with fists in the air. This was the definition of Metal. Some people complained about the sound in Turbinenhalle, but I think it was really perfect for tonight. This because the early Sodom was known for their rawness. I only had one disappointment. I expected at least one time, a small guest appearance by Mr. Grave Violator himself. The cult guitarist on the first EP, “In the Sign of Evil”. Nevertheless it was a really great night of drinking, thrashing and meeting good old friends of the Metal family. It was a really great night, and I especially like to thank the German promotor Marco Vorst to bring me backstage to have a final Jack Cola with my befriended musicians. Always good to be back in Germany.
