Coming from Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico and formed way back in the year 1985. Exanime is one of the oldest still running Death Metal hordes in the Country. Time to have a talk to these veterans.
-How was Exanime formed and by who and why did it take more than 30 years to release a full album? Are you happy with this release and how’s the feedback by fans and press on it?
Exanime began in 1986 in Monterrey NL Mexico, in the northern part of the city. A working-class area with economic deficiencies ... But this did not stop the passion for music and wanting to express our ideas and begin to play the instruments and compose original music.
I am happy of course, why? It is always pleasant to see your music getting recorded physically and to see the art of the album ... Of course there is always that feeling of always improving ... But we wanted to make it more human and not "add" "make up".
What you hear on the record is exactly what you hear live.
There has been very good acceptance from people, very good comments towards us, we have also received very good reviews of our music and many invitations to play.
-Please introduce your band and who’s in since the beginning?
The band started with Aspy on drums, Sacry on guitar, Peter Rojas on vocals and Theo on bass.
The band has already done home recordings, live recordings and rehearsals, but it is never too late to capture the work of Exanime and we are ready to record the 2nd album. Which will contain 8 songs.
Currently Exanime is:
Min Cortez - Growls.
Charly Nájera - Lead Guitar.
Aspy Arellano - Drums.
Alan D Alton - Lead Guitar.
And as a bass player we have had invited musicians from sister bands who have supported us.
Aspy is the most veteran and initiator of the band and I'm the second. Aspy since 1986 and I since 1990, and here we continue until we move to another dimension.
I have known everyone in the group since the 80's, in fact we live in the same neighbourhood. You could say that it is our usual gang. Yes, you can, ... I have always been since the 80's.
-You started back in the eighties! Which bands and or artists influenced you guys?
In my particular person: Álex Lifeson and Trey Azaghtoth and about the band we share our taste: Slayer, Celtic Frost, Bathory, Venom, Morbid Angel. It would be a very, very long list of influences ... And of course going through all the classics that we listened when we were children.
-Do you often play live? Any cool road stories to tell? You ever crossed any borders? For example that one to the United States…
We have our seasons, hahaha. We have many invitations fortunately, but we do not want to play so much to maintain, you can say, that underground theme ... Clarifying not for being unfriendly or "suckers".
At one occasion in a city, here in Mexico, called Monclova people were very fired up. So much that in the slam blows a person jumped off the stage falling on top of the console, spoiling the sound. But thanks to the fact that we brought our equipment we managed to get ahead and very good play and other very good anecdotes in Chihuahua state as well.
-What are your future plans with the band, any crazy things coming up?
We have had invitations to go to South America and Central America, United States. Unfortunately, visa applications to the United States have been denied to some members of the band, but one day we will be able to do so.....
-Top 5 Classic Death Metal albums!
Altar Of Madness.
Raining Blood
Morbid Tales
Left Hand Path
Spiritual Healing
Seven Churches
Among hundreds more. It is difficult to name only 5 albums. More come to mind, but personally these are classics.
-Thanks for the interview, last words!
Thank you very much for this interview for your fanzine. A big hug from Monterrey Mexico and to all headbangers from all over the planet. Keep the real passion towards extreme music and let's keep the underground strong.
