Having to review Polish Death Metal is not something new. Having to review a Polish Death Metal band from Warsaw that has recorded an album that is in Polish as well as English, that definitely is a first for me. The fans have had to wait some six years before Gloria Mortis was released. And woe is me, I have them waiting almost another half a year before I get to writing this review.

As I am not a religious Death Metal adept, I can honestly say that I have listened to Gloria Mortis with a very open mind. What immediately came to mind is that they have a lot of old school influences, but Chimera does mix them with more contemporary sounds and rhythms. And for me this combination does work. This makes sense, has a (black) soul, is very much a culmination of years of experience. They don’t go blasting full force, but make use of mid- and low tempo rhythms, allowing them to express their musical tastes to the utmost degree.

What makes it even better is the use of their mother tongue in the lyrics. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; if you vocalise your thoughts in the language you are most comfortable with, you get your emotions across much better than in any other language. So, that’s another notch on the post of Chimera.

I’m not going to tell you that they are doing anything new, or that they will change the face of Death Metal, but they really do have recorded quite an impressive album. I know I have added the Bandcamp site of Chimera, but I got this album through the record companies mentioned above. So, I would look up their sites to get hold of this one. Good luck.
