Yes, I do realise that this album was released in 2019, but somehow it never got the attention it deserves. That is going to change now. These Dutchies are from Breda, in the South of the Netherlands, and they play Atmospheric Black Metal. This album exists of five songs, which all together clock just over 40 minutes. Except for the last one they all start slow and easy, with vocalist Sylvia Saunders using her angelic voice.
In all cases there is a point where the band decides enough is enough, and they morph into this pure Black Metal ensemble, and Sylvia starts her growls, grunts and screams. And it works. At least, for me it does. Musically the songs are very strong, they have depth, they have substance, they’re not just hot air.
Lyrically The Fifth Alliance can be very depressing, but that suits the music down to a T. and the way everything is put together actually has my vote, because you will be slung between the different emotions and atmosphere changes with an ease that will surprise you.
The last song on the album, “Alisteir”, goes for broke from the start. It is a very much in your face song, with the tempo being a little lower than in the fast parts of the other songs. Even though it is the least varied tune on “The Depth Of Darkness”, it is the most impressive one.
I enjoy listening to these tunes by The Fifth Alliance. It’s time that you, as the proper metalhead, try them out as well. Just go to the record company, or the Bandcamp site, and gat your copy. You won’t regret it.
