Abysmal Dawn are amelodic death metal ensemble from Los Angeles and they have just released their sixth record. It is an EP with the title Nightmare Frontier. It contains three of their own songs and a cover. I have to say that it sounds like the band have unleashed all their cropped-up feelings in these tunes.
The result is hard and heavy hitting death metal with regular blastbeats, but also with intermezzos and breaks that remind me of In Flames during their Colony times. Whatever they do, Abysmal Dawn does it in true death metal style and it actually fits like the proverbial glove. What is very surprising is the Candlemass cover Bewitched, which ends this EP. It is sung with a clean voice, and sounds absolutely amazing. What a treat.
If you know the band already, you will know what to expect. If you don’t, this might be a good point to find out what they sound like. Whether you like them or not, there’s no escaping the fact that they have the quality and stamina to write good songs. So, whatever you decide will be because of your personal taste, not because they don’t know what they’re doing.
